The official 10/7 dedication was announced today by Beata Chochla, President and Founder, the Hanley Harper Group Inc.(HHG), for the renovation opening of the original John Dewey Elementary School now named Frederick Douglass International Academy (FDIA) at 21700 Marlow Ave. in Oak Park, Michigan. This school in the management companyʼs growing roster welcomes students in grades PRE-K through 6.
Additionally introduced is Rashid Faisal, Ed.M, as FDIA founding principal. Faisal comes to the school with an extraordinary history in education. He served as Project Manager and Achievement Advisor for Pearson School Achievement Services, Inc., where he provided school improvement and leadership consultation to schools in metro-Detroit. Prior to joining Pearson, Faisal served as an elementary and middle school principal where he helped to transform the academic and school climate. [Read more…]
Not so very long ago, the nondescript, one-story elementary school on Marlow Avenue in the south section of Oak Park was vacant, its floors rotting, its windows broken. For about five years it sat, a target of vandals, a reminder of what was.
Now, the windows have been repaired, the floors fixed, the classes filled with students. On Wednesday, there was a ribbon cutting ceremony at the front entrance of the new school called Frederick Douglass International Academy, replete with speeches, politicians, alumni from decades ago and children and the principal reciting quotes from Frederick Douglass.

The 50,000-square-foot Frederick Douglass International Academy, previously the site of John Dewey Elementary School, was authorized last year through Ferris State University to school operator Hanley Harper Group Inc. According to Beata Chochla, president and founder of Hanley Harper Group, the charter school management company purchased the building in March for $215,000 and is in the middle of a $2.2 million renovation.
